Whitetail Deer Hunting, Colorado
Hunting Season: Hunting Season: October 22nd – November 20th (Archery/Muzzleloader season is longer)
Undoubtedly the most pursued game species on the planet needs little introduction; The whitetail Deer’s range expands from Canada in the North all the way down to the top of South America, there is even a good population as far south as Peru. However without the doubt the best location for a Whitetail is North America. He is remarkably adaptable, and has such a large range that he can be pursued in ecosystems ranging from boreal forests to subtropical jungles to western deserts.
The Whitetail deer is a wary animal that relies on a keen sense of smell, excellent hearing and eyesight to avoid danger. The deer is aptly named because of the white “flag” on his tail that he shows as he disappears, averting the hunter. Living in groups for added safety for the majority of the year, they are quite a vocal deer, playing an array of grunts and snorts in aggression and rut, and of course that all too familiar whistle indicating that you have been foiled, and pursuit must resume on another day.
As bucks become older, it is said that they become more nocturnal thereby making it harder to shoot during daylight hours. In a species as commonly pursued as Whitetail, the big mature bucks get old, because they have more sense than their peers. Redemption for the hunter however comes in that he is very territorial; it has been said that a whitetail spends his entire life within an 8 mile radius, perhaps using the same bed in a thick piece of cover for months or even years. In the rut bucks do tend do wander more and certainly become more active.
